Sulphamethoxazole Pyrimethamine

Generic Name : Sulphamethoxazole Pyrimethamine

TradeName : METAKELFIN

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Sulphamethoxazole: It is an ultra long acting sulfonamide and in combination with pyrimethamine the effect is super additive. Pyrimethamine is an inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase. It is a slow acting schizonticide. It can eliminate pre-erytheocytic phase of P.falciparun and secondary tissue phase of P.vivax. It is employed alone development of resistance occurs fast.

When it is to be taken : Adults: Prophylaxis: 1 tab (combination in the ratio of 500mg sulphamethaxarole + 25mg pyrimethamine once a week. Treatment: 2 tabs in a single dose. Children: 9-14 years: 3/4 tab 4-8 years: 1/2 tab under 4: 1/4 tab. All once a week.

How it should be taken : The medication comes in the form of tablets.

Special Instruction :
Check whether you have 6 G6PD deficiency. The drug interacts with antifolic drugs. Do not use these agents while patient is receiving sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine.

Side Effects :
Nausea, vomiting, skin rash, proritus, erythema multiforme.

Other Precautions :
Contraindicated in case of pregnancy & lactation.

Storage Conditions :
Store at room temperature.

Sulindac

Generic Name : Sulindac

TradeName : Arflur, Naprosin, Sulind

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Sulindac relieves the pain, tenderness, inflammation, swelling, and stiffness caused by certain types of arthritis, including gout.

When it is to be taken : Sulindac usually is taken twice a day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part that you do not understnd. Although arthritis symptoms may improve within one week, a longer period may be required.

How it should be taken : Sunlindac comes in the form of tablets. Your prescription label tells you much to take at each dose. Sulindac should be taken with food.

Special Instruction :
1. Sulindac can cause dizziness. Do not drive a car or operate dangerous machinery until you know how it affects you.
2. Take only the amount of medication prescribed. If you think that you need more to relieve your symptoms, contact your doctor.
3. Keep all appointments with your doctor. Your doctor may wish to adjust your dose.
4. If you forget to take a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if you remember a missed dose near the time you are to take the next dose, take only the regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose.

Side Effects :
1. Indigestion, Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or cramps, gas, diarrhoea or constipation, lack of appetite. Take this medication with food.
2. Do not drink alcoholic beverages.
3. Skin rash and fever, headache, dizziness, nervousness, ringing in the ears, swelling of feet or lower legs. Contact your doctor.

Other Precautions :
1. Women who are pregnant
or breast-feeding should inform their doctors before taking sulindac.
2. Tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking, especially anticoagulants, aspirin, other arthritis medications, and methotrexate.
3. Tell your doctor if you ever had gastritis or bleeding from the stomach or rectum, ulcers, diverticulitis, liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes.
4. If you ever had a bad reaction to aspirin or other arthritis medications, tell your doctor before you take sulindac.
5. Do not take aspirin while taking sulindac unless directed to do so by your doctor.
6. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Storage Conditions :
1. Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children.
2. Store it at room temperature, away from excess heat.

Sulfisoxazole

Generic Name : Sulfisoxazole

TradeName
: Sulfafurazole, Gantrisin

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Sulfisoxazole, a sulfa drug, eliminate bacteria that cause infections, especially urinary tract infections.

When it is to be taken : Sulfisoxazole is usually taken four times a day for 10 to 14 days or longer. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part that you do not understand. Sulfisoxazole should be taken at evenly spaced intervals between the time you wake up in the morning and the time you go to bed at night.

How it should be taken :
1. Sulfisoxazole comes in tables and oral liquid. Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose.
2. Your first dose will probably be two times the amount of all other doses. Take each dose with a full glass of water.

Special Instruction :
1. Drink at least eight glasses of liquid every day.
2. Take all of the medication prescribed, even after you begin to feel well. Failure to do so could allow the infection to return.
3. Do not stop taking sulfisoxazole without your doctor's consent. If you will be outside fro long periods, wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen to protect your skin from sunlight.
4. Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory while taking sulfisoxazole, especially if you take this drug for more than two weeks. Blood tests may be needed to make sure that yo do not have adverse effects.
5. If you forget to take a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it, even it you have to double the next dose. Take any remaining doses for that day evenly spaced intervals.

Side Effects :
1. Skin rash, skin changes. Stop taking the drug and contact your doctor.
2. Upset stomach. Take the drug after meals or with a snack.
3. Diarrhoea, loss of appetite, loss of balance. If these effects are severe or last for more then two days, contact your doctor.
4. Sore throat, fever, headache, joint or muscle aches, pale or yellow skin, tiredness, unusual bleeding or bruising, weakness. Contact your doctor at once.

Other Precautions :
1. If you have had a bad reaction to any sulfa drug, water pills, or oral diabetes drugs, do not take this medicine without telling your doctor.
2. Before taking sulfisoxazole, tell your doctor if you have asthma, kidney disease, or liver disease or if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.
3. Tell your dotor if you are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications, especially anticoagulants such as warfarin, phenytoin, methotrexate, diluretics, and oral medication for diabetes. If you still have the same symptoms after taking all of your medication, contact your doctor.
4. If your doctor tells you to stop taking it, throw away any unused medication.

Sulfasalazine

Generic Name : Sulfasalazine

TradeName : Sazo-en

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Sulfasalazine is a sulfa drug used to relieve and prevent irritation of the colon and rectum caused by mild or moderate ulcerative colitis.

When it is to be taken : Sulfasalazine is usually taken four times a day. It may have to be taken for one year or longer. Doses should be spaced throughout the day so that no more than eight hours separates any two doses, if possible. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part tht you do not understand.

How it should be taken :
1. Sulfasalazine comes in plain and coated tablets and oral liquid.
2. Each dose should be taken after a meal or with a light snack and followed by a full glass of water.
3. Tablets should be swallowed whole, not chewed or crushed. <

Special Instruction :
1. Drink at least eight glasses of liquid every day.
2. Take all of the medication prescribed, even after the irritation disappears. Failure to do so could allow the irritation to return.
3. Do not stop taking sulfazalazine without your doctor's consent.
4. watch carefully for signs of sunburn. If you must be outside for long periods, wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen to protect your skin from sunlight.

Side Effects :

2. Skin rash, itching, hives, swelling. Stop taking the medication and contact your doctor.
3. Male infertility. Fertility return when the drug is stopped.
4. Yellowish-orange coloring of the urine. The effect is harmless.
5. Sore throat, fever, joint or muscle aches, pale or yellow skin, swallowing problems, tiredness, unusual bleeding or bruising, weakness. Contact your doctor at once.

Other Precautions :
1. If you have had a bad reaction to any sulfa drug or oral diabetes drugs, do not take sulfasalazine without telling your doctor.
2. Before taking sulfasalazine, tell your doctor if you have asthma, hay fever kidney disease, liver disease, or blockage in your intestine or urinary tract or if you ar pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.
3. Do not take any other prescription or nonprescription medications without consulting your doctor; other drugs may react with sulfasalazine and change their effects or increase side effects.

Sulfacetamide Ophthalmic

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Sulfacetamide stops the growth of bacteria that cause certain eye infections. It is used to treat eye infections and to prevent them after injuries.

When it is to be taken
: Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part that you do not understand.

How it should be taken : Sulfacetamide comes in the form of eyedrops and eye ointment. Your prescription label tells hyou how much ointment or how many drops to use for each application.
If you are to use eyedrops, follow these steps :
1. Wash your hands thor

Special Instruction
:
1. Keep the tip of the dropper or ointment tube from touching your infected eye or eyelid, your hands, or any other possible sources of contaimination.
2. If your infection does not improve within two or three days or if it gets worse, contact your doctor.
3. If you forget to apply a dose, apply the missed dose when you remember it and apply any remaining treatments for that day at evenly spaced intervals. However, if you remember a missed dose at the time you are scheduled to apply the mext one, do not apply a double dose; apply only the scheduled treatment. Then follow your regular medication schedule.

Side Effects :
Stinging or burning eyes. If this effect occurs right after you apply the medication and goes away soon after, it is harmless. If it does not go away, contact your doctor.

1. If you are allergic to sulfa drugs, tell your doctor before using sulfacetamide ophthalmic.
2. Do not allow anyone else to use this medication. The infection can be spread to another person if you accidentally contaminate the medication.

Sucralfate

Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : Sucralfate is used to treat ulcers. It adheres to damaged ulcer tissue and protects against acid and enzymes so healing can occur.

When it is to be taken : Sucralfate is usually taken four times a day, one hour before meals and at bedtime. It should be taken on an empty stomach. This medication must be taken regularly to be effective. It may take up to eight weeks for ulcers to heal. Follow the instructiions on your prescription label, and ask your doctor to explain any part that you do not understand.

How it should be taken : Sucralfate comes in the form of tablets. Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose.

Special Instruction
:
1. Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. If you are also taking antacids, ciprofloxacin, phenytoin, or tetracycline, do not take any of them within 30 minutes of taking sucralfate.
2. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any signs of internal bleeding (passing red or black stools or coughing up or vomiting material that is bright red or looks like coffee grounds).
3. If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, omit the missed dose and take only the scheduled one. Do not take a double dose.

Side Effects :
Although side effects from sucralfate are not common, they can occur. Constipation. Contact your doctor if this effect is persistent or severe.

SUCCINYLCHOLINE

Generic Name : SUCCINYLCHOLINE

TradeName : ENTUBATE® [inj]

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Induction and maintenance of general anesthesia by relaxing muscles.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Genetic disorders of plasma enzyme abnormality, personal/family history of elevated body temperature, hypersensitivity from previous neuromuscular drug, severe burns, massive trauma, extensive denervation of skeletal muscle, patients with risk of excess plasma potassium, liver impairment, sudden eye pressure.

When it is to be taken : Muscle relaxant in general anaesthesia Adult: As chloride: 3 to 4 mg/kg. Max total dose: 150 mg Child: As chloride: <1 yr: Up to 4 to 5 mg/kg; ≥1 yr: Up to 4 mg/kg. Max dose: 150 mg.

How it should be taken : Intra muscular injection.

Special Instruction :
*Caution needed for patients with history of bone fracture, raised eye pressure, neuromuscular disease, infants, children, adolescents, pregnancy and lactation. *It should only be used in children in emergency situations

Side Effects :
Heart:
Chest pain; fast breathing; fast or slow heartbeat pauses in breathing; pounding in the chest tightness in the chest.
Muscle:
Muscle pain following surgery; muscle twitching, tightening of jaw or other muscles.
SKIN:
Rash; hives; itching.
Miscellaneous:
Increased saliva; difficulty in breathing; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; high body temperature; increased pressure in the eye.

Other Precautions :
Do not change the dosage with out health care provider's advice.

Stool softeners

Generic Name : Stool softeners

TradeName : Docusates, Cellubril, Laxicon

Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : Stool softeners soften stools, making them easier to pass. They are taken on a short-term basis to relieve constipation by people who should avoid straining during bowel movements because of heart conditions, hemorrhoids, and other problems.

When it is to be taken
: A stool softener usually is taken at bedtime. Follow the directiions on the label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part that you do not understand. One to three days of regular use usually are required for this mediction to take effect. Do not take stool softeners for more than one week unless your doctor directs you to do so.

How it should be taken : A stool softener comes in the form of capsules, tablets, oral liquid, and syrup form. The label tells you how much to take at each dose. Take capsules and tablets with a full glass of water. You may obtain a specially marked measuring spoon to be sure of

Special Instruction :
1. Do not take stool softeners if you have nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain; contact a doctor.
2. If sudden changes in bowel habits persist for longer than two weeks or if your stools are still hard after you have taken this medication for one week, contact your doctor.
3. Do not take stool softeners continuously for constipation and do not take more medication at each dose than as directed.
4. Frequent or prolonged use of laxatives can make you dependent on them and can cause your bowels to lose their normal ability.
5. Special dietary instructions should be followed. To prevent constipation, drink plenty of fluids, exercise regularly, and eat a high-fiber diet, including whole-grain, cereals, salads, fruits, and vegetables.

Side Effects :
1. Mild, temporary stomach or intestinal cramps; throat irritation. Contat your doctor if these effects are severe or persist.

Stavudine

Generic Name : Stavudine

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : It is a synthetic thymidine nucleoside analogue, active against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

When it is to be taken : Treatment of adults with advanced HIV infection

How it should be taken : Patients greater than or equal to 60 kg: 40 mg twice daily and less than or equal to 60 kg: 30 mg twice daily.

Special Instruction :
Contraindication: Hypersensitivity

Side Effects :
Peripheral neuropathy is the major clinical toxicity. Pancreatitis, anaemia, arthralgia, headache, fever, rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, elevated transaminase values. Serious bone marrow toxicity appears to be uncommon.

Other Precautions :
Renal and hepatic impairment. Monitor patients for development of peripheral neuropathy. Pregnancy
: Use only if clearly indicated. Lactation: Discontinue nursing. Elderly: May be used.

Storage Conditions :
Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from heat and direct light. Store the oral solution form in the refrigerator. However, keep the medicine from freezing. Do not store the capsules or long-acting capsules in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down.

Spironolactone

Generic Name : Spironolactone

TradeName : Aldactone

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and water retention caused by conditions such as heart and liver disease and lung problems. It causes the kidneys to eliminate unneeded water into the urine.

When it is to be taken : Spironolactone is usually taken twice a day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part that you do not understand. If you are to take spironolactone once a day, take it in the morning; if you are to take it twice a day, take it in the morning and in the late afternoon to avoid going to the bathroom at night.

How it should be taken : Spironolactone comes in the form of tablets. Your prescription label tells you how mcuh to take at each dose. Take spironolactone with meals or immediately after eating. Your doctor may change your dose from time to time, depending on your response.

Special Instruction:
  1. Weigh yourself once a day or once every other day, and contact your doctor if you gain weight rapidly.
2. Keep all appointments with your doctor. Your blood pressure should be checked regularly, and blood tests may be done occasionally. Do not stop taking spironolactone without consulting your doctor.
3. Special dietary instructions should be followed. Avoid salt substitutes containing potassium and excessive amounts of potassium-rich foods such as bananas, apricots, coconut, dates, prunes, peaches, and grapefruit, tomato, and orange juices.
4. If you forget to take a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it and take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, omit the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Side Effects :
1. Frequent urination. This common side effect usually disappears after a few weeks.
2. Muscle weakness, fatigue, decreased sexual ability, increased breast size, breast soreness, palpitations. Contact your doctor; your medication may have to be changed.

Other Precautions :
1. If you ever had kidney or liver problems, tell your doctor before taking spironolactone.
2. Aspirin may decrease the effects of spironolactone, and other medications may lower blood pressure too much, causing lightheadness and faintness.
3. Tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking before taking spironolactone.
4. If you are breast-feeding a baby or if you become pregnant, let your doctor know.
5. Before having surgey, including dental surgery, tell the doctor that you take spironolactone.
6. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Somatropin

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : It is a synthetic human growth hormone

When it is to be taken
: Growth disturbances caused by insufficeint secretion of endogenous growth hormone or by gonadal dysgenesis

How it should be taken : Individual:, generally 0.1 I.u.kg body weight per day (or higher doses as judged) div into 6-7 subcutaneous injection recommended.Turners syndrome: 0.14 I.u.kg body weight / day.

Special Instruction :
Evidence of tumor activity(complete antitumor therapy and ensure intracranial lesions inactive before starting); not to be used after renal transplantation or for growth promotion in children with closed epiphyses.

Side Effects :
Funduscopy for papilloedema recommended if severe or recurrent headache, visual problems, nausea and vomititing occur- If papilloedema confirmed, consider benign intracranial hypertension (rare case reported); fluid retention (peripheral oedema, arthralgia, myalgia),antibody formation, hypothyroidism, transient reactions at injection site; leukaemia in children with growth hormone deficiency also reported.

Other Precautions :
Diabetes mellitus (adjustment of antidiabetic therapy may be necessary), papilloedema, relative deficiencies of other pituitary hormones (notably hypothyroidism-periodic thyroid function tests recommended), history of malignant disease, slipped epiphysis of the hip ( monitor for limping), resolved intracranial hypertension (monitor closely).Pregnancy: Better avoided

Storage Conditions :
Unreconstituted formm of the drug should be refrigerated at 36° to 46° F. After reconstitution, the product is stable for 14 days refrigerated or for 24 hours at room temperature.

Sodium oxybate

Generic Name : Sodium oxybate

TradeName : Xyrem

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : It is a central nervous system depressant. It is used to treat daytime sleepiness in patients with narcolepsy , and sudden muscular weakness called cataplexy.

When it is to be taken : It must be taken exactly as prescribed by the physician . It should be taken at bedtime and again 2 and a half hours later.

How it should be taken : Each dose has to be mixed with a quarter cup of water in the container supplied with the drug. Both the doses must be used the same night. Any remaining drug must be thrown away.

Special Instruction :
It is a habit forming drug. It is called the street drug of abuse. Therefore it is available only through a special program and the treatment can be carried out only under strict monitoring by a doctor. Avoid drinking alcohol, driving and operating machinery.
Special precautions in liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, or kidney disease , history of alcohol or drug abuse, asthma, emphysema, or bronchitis, sleep apnea, mental illness such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

Side Effects :
Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, depression, agitation,numbness,tremors, blurred vision. Other serious side effects are hallucinations, sleepwalking, confusion,shallow breathing. Consult the doctor if these symptoms occur.

Other Precautions :
Contraindicated in hypersensitivity, and a rare metabolic disorder called succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency.

SODIUM HYALURONATE

Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : This medication is prescribed for skin diseases. It belongs to mucopolysaccharide group. It replaces a substance found in the skin.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate or avian proteins.

When it is to be taken :
Skin ulcers and wounds As cream, gel or spray: Apply a thin layer onto clean and disinfected wound/ulcer twice or thrice a day. Cover with sterile, non-stick dressing

How it should be taken : Apply over affected area gently.

Special Instruction :
Do not get it in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you get it in your eyes, rinse with cool water right away.*Do not use this gel for other skin conditions at a later time.*Monitor eye pressure. *Caution need for pregnant women.

: It comes as 5/10 gram ointment or cream.

Special Instruction :
Avoid using the drug in case of hypersensitivity to fusidates.

(Indications) : This medication is prescribed for type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood), particularly in people whose diabetes cannot be controlled by diet alone. It is used along with diet and exercise.It regulates the amount of sugar in the blood.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Hypersensitivity

When it is to be taken
: Adults Oral: 100 mg once daily with or without food.

How it should be taken : It comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food.

Special Instruction :
*Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication. *Caution should be exercised in patients with history of diabetes, kidney disease, during pregnancy and lactation. *It may lead to low blood sugar, monitor blood sugar regularly.

Overview : Sirolimus is used with other immunosuppressants to prevent kidney transplant rejection. It act by suppressing immune system.

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Sirolimus is used to prevent organ rejection after a renal transplantation. Sirolimus is an immunosuppressant which blocks the action of T lymphocytes which can cause the body to reject the transplanted organ.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Sirolimus should not be used • If you are allergic to any ingredient in Sirolimus • If you are pregnant • If you have had a liver or lung transplant • If you are taking astemizole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, a macrolide antibiotic (eg, erythromycin), rifabutin, rifampin, tacrolimus, telithromycin, terfenadine, or voriconazole Contact your doctor or health care provide immediately if any of these apply to you.

Missed a Dose? :
• If you miss a dose of Sirolimus, take it immediately. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dosie without fail.

How it should be taken : Use Sirolimus as prescribed by your doctor. • You can take Sirolimus by mouth on an empty stomach or with food. • Clean your hands immediately after taking Sirolimus. • If you are also taking cyclosporine, take Sirolimus 4 hours after your cyclosporine dose unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. • Sirolimus works better if it is taken at the same time every day. Continue Sirolimus even if you feel well. • Do not stop taking Sirolimus without consulting your doctor.

Special Instruction :
Some medical conditions can interact with Sirolimus. Inform your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following apply to you: • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding • if you have allergic to any medicines, foods, or substances. • if you have liver problems, kidney problems, diabetes, r breathing problems • if you have had multiple organ transplants, or a previous transplant that has been rejected

• Sirolimus can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid driving other unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. • Do not change your dose of Sirolimus without consulting your doctor. • Inform your doctor if you notice signs of infection like fever, sore throat, rash, or chills. • Sirolimus can increase your risk for developing skin cancer. • Discuss with your doctor before you receive any vaccine. • Inform your doctor if you have dark, tarry, or bloody stools. • Inform your doctor or dentist that you take Sirolimus before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.

Drug Interactions :

Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, lisinopril) because a serious side effect involving swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, throat, and hands; trouble swallowing or breathing; and unexplained hoarseness may occur • Aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin), amiodarone, amphotericin B, azole antifungals (eg, fluconazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole), bromocriptine, cimetidine, cisapride, cyclosporine, danazol, diltiazem, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), metoclopramide, mibefradil, nicardipine, streptogramins (eg, dalfopristin), tacrolimus, telithromycin, troleandomycin, or verapamil because they may increase the risk of Sirolimus 's side effects, including kidney problems • Astemizole, calcineurin inhibitors (eg, tacrolimus), HMG Co-A reductase inhibitors (eg, atorvastatin), mycophenolate, or terfenadine because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Sirolimus

Storage Conditions

Sirolimus should be stored at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store in a such a way to avoid heat, moisture, and light.

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is used for lowering high cholesterol and triglycerides in certain patients with appropriate diet. It reduces the risk of cardio vascular diseases, and blood vessels blockage.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Acute liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases. Caution need during pregnancy, lactation.

When it is to be taken : Hyperlipidaemias Adult: Initially, 10-20 mg/day, to be taken in the evening. May start with 40 mg once daily in patients with high CV risk or require a large reduction in cholesterol. For patients with moderate CV risk, initiate with 10 mg once daily.

How it should be taken : It comes as a tablet to take by mouth (orally). It is usually taken one to three times a day, with or without food. (Avoid excessive consumption (> 1 L/day) of grapefruit juice.

Special Instruction :

• Caution should be exercised patients with history of liver disease. • It may lead to rapid breakdown of skeletal muscle (rhabdomyolysis), severe infection, hypotension, major surgical trauma, uncontrolled seizures or severe metabolic, endocrine and electrolyte disorder. • Avoid drinking Alcohol otherwise it may result in liver failure. • This medication should be used with extreme caution in children younger than 10 years old and in those who have not reached puberty. Discontinue treatment if there is marked or persistent increase in serum-aminotransferase concentrations.

When it is to be taken : Infective Hepatitis A, chronic active hepatitis, toxic metabolic hepatic damage, carbon tetrachloride poisoning, mushroom poisoning. As a suuportive treatment in cirrhosis and alcoholic liver disease.

How it should be taken : 70- 140 mg bid/tid
