Stavudine

Generic Name : Stavudine

TradeName : STAVIR, LAMIVIR-S

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : It is a synthetic thymidine nucleoside analogue, active against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

When it is to be taken : Treatment of adults with advanced HIV infection

How it should be taken : Patients greater than or equal to 60 kg: 40 mg twice daily and less than or equal to 60 kg: 30 mg twice daily.

Special Instruction :
Contraindication: Hypersensitivity

Side Effects :
Peripheral neuropathy is the major clinical toxicity. Pancreatitis, anaemia, arthralgia, headache, fever, rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, elevated transaminase values. Serious bone marrow toxicity appears to be uncommon.

Other Precautions :
Renal and hepatic impairment. Monitor patients for development of peripheral neuropathy. Pregnancy
: Use only if clearly indicated. Lactation: Discontinue nursing. Elderly: May be used.

Storage Conditions :
Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from heat and direct light. Store the oral solution form in the refrigerator. However, keep the medicine from freezing. Do not store the capsules or long-acting capsules in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down.
