DUTASTERIDE

Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : This medication is prescribed for an enlarged prostate treatment. It blocks the production of a natural substance that enlarges the prostate and reduces the need for surgery.

When it is not to be taken
(Contraindications) : Severe liver impairment; pregnant women, children, adolescent.

When it is to be taken
: Adult: 500 mcg daily (treatment for 6 month may be required before benefit is obtained).

How it should be taken
: It comes as a capsule to take by mouth, with or without food.

Special Instruction :
* tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease or prostate cancer. * This drug only for men.*touching the contents of the capsules by pregnant female may harm the fetus. Avoid touching the medication directly, if it does so wash properly.

Side Effects :

Special Instruction
:

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : It is prescribed for depression, anxiety disorder, and also used for managing pain caused by fibromyalgia and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPNP).It maintains the mental balance and stops the movement of pain signals in the brain.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : It may cause uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, liver damage and kidney failure. Harmful in pregnancy and lactation.

When it is to be taken : Depression Adult: Initial Dose: 40 mg per day (administered as 20 mg twice daily) to 60 mg per day (given either once a day or as 30 mg twice daily) without regard to meals.

How it should be taken : It comes as a delayed-release (long-acting) capsule to take by mouth. When duloxetine is used to treat depression, it is usually taken once or twice a day with or without food. (Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.).

Special Instruction :
*Avoid alcohol because alcohol can increase the risk of serious side effects from this medication. *It may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when you get up too quickly from a lying position. Get up slowly from bed. *May make you drowsy, dizzy, or may affect your judgment, thinking or coordination. Do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication. *Contact the doctor right away if any signs of suicidal thoughts or actions occur. *Check blood sugar levels closely

Side Effects :
HEART
Hot flush; palpitations; heart attack, hypertensive crisis, abnormal heart rhythm.
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Drowsiness; headache; dizziness; sleeplessness; fatigue; decreased appetite; lack of energy, agitation; tremor; decreased sexual activities, tingling; abnormal dreams, anxiety, migraine, elevated body temperature, sleep disorder; yawning; partial loss of sensitivity, lethargy, vertigo; aggression, anger, restless leg syndrome, seizures upon treatment discontinuation.
SKIN

Doxycycline

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : It is a synthetic broad spectrum antibiotic derived from tetracycline

When it is to be taken : The medication is taken orally by mouth.start the dose with 100 mgs in the case of capsules and 25mgs/teaspoon in the case of suspension.

How it should be taken : The medication comes in the form of capsules and suspension.

Special Instruction :
The medication can be taken along with the meals.It should not be used along with aluminium,magnesium and calcium based antacids.It should not also be taken along with minerals.

Side Effects :
Diarrhoea,loose stools,abdominal pain,vomitting are the common side effects ofr this drug.

Doxorubicin

Generic Name : Doxorubicin

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : They are used in the treatment of various cancers to slow or stop the growth of cancer cells. A combination of different types of cancer drugs will often be used to achieve better results and minimize side effects. Doxorubicin is used alone and in combination with other drugs for treatment of tumors. The effectiveness of treatment can be seen by decrease in size or spread of malignancies in solid tumors, or improvement of hematologic status in leukemias.

When it is to be taken : The purpose of chemotherapy is to control your illness so that your own body can aid in your recovery. It is important to build up your body's defense system, and a balanced diet is needed to build a healthy body. Ask your doctor for advice on your diet.

How it should be taken
: Doxorubicin is given intravenously. It is given alone or with other drugs. Dose for adults is 60-75 mg once in 21 days or 30 mg daily for 3 days every four weeks.

Special Instruction :
1. It should not be given if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
2. If there is liver impairment, dosage must be reduced, and if you have had previous radiation, your skin may be aggravated at the site.
3. Do not receive any vaccinations without discussing with your doctor.
4. This is a potent medication. Use it exactly as prescribed.
5. Tell your doctor or nurse immediately if you experience pain, burning or redness at the place where injected.
6. Unless your doctor instructs you otherwise, drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication. This helps your kidneys to remove the drug from your body and avoid some of the side effects.
7. Do not stop taking this medication, even if you feel nauseated or experience vomiting.

Side Effects :
1. This drug causes additive bone marrow depression in combination with other cancer treatments and radiation.
2. Hair loss is possible.
3. The drug can make your urine appear red for 1-2 days.
4. Risk of mouth inflammation is greatest 5-10 days after treatment and usually lasts 3-7 days.
5. Notify your doctor promptly if you have fever, sore throat, signs of infection, bleeding gums, bruising, blood in stools or urine, and increased fatigue.
6. Notify your doctor immediately if you have irregular heart beat, shortness of breath, or swelling of legs.
7. Tell your doctor if you get a skin irritation at the site of previous radiation therapy.

Other Precautions :

1. Avoid crowds and persons with known infections.
2. Use a soft toothbrush and electric razor and avoid falls.
3. Do not drink alcoholic beverages or take drugs containing aspirin because these can cause gastric bleeding.
4. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water after eating and drinking.
5. Practice contraception during treatment and for at least 4 months after therapy is concluded.
6. This medication must not be used by women who are or may become pregnant or while nursing.
7. Because this medication can affect the production of sperm in men, a reliable form of birth control is recommended while taking this medication.
8. Tell your doctor if you have pre-existing blood disorders, liver disease or heart disease.
9. Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take.

Doxepin

Generic Name : Doxepin

TradeName : Doxedep, Doxetar, Doxin, Spectra

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Doxepin, an antidepressant or mood elevator, is used to treat depression.

When it is to be taken : Doxepin usually is taken one to three times a day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully. Doxepin must be taken regularly to be effective. Do not skip doses, even if you feel that you do not need them. The drug must be taken regularly at least two week before its full effect is felt.

How it should be taken
: Doxepin comes in the form of capsules and oral liquid. Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose. Doxepin concentrate or oral liquid comes with a special marked dropper for measuring the dose. Dilute the concentrate in 120ml of water

Special Instruction :
1. Doxepin can cause drowsiness, especially during the first few weeks that you take it.
2. Do not drive a car or operate dangerous machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
3. Keep all appointments with your doctor. Your dose may need to be adjusted occasionally.
4. Do not stop taking doxepin abruptly, especially if you have taken large doses for a long time. Your doctor probably will want to decrease your dose gradually.
5. If you miss to take a dose and you are to take several doses a day, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it and take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals. However, if your remember a missed dose when it is alsmost time for your next scheduled dose, omit the missed dose entirely. If you take doxepin once a day at bedtime and do not remember to take it until the next morning, omit the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

Side Effects :
1. Drowsiness, weakness, tiredness, anxiety, excitement, insomnia, blurred vision, difficulty urinating. Take the drug at bedtime if it causes drowsiness; take it in the morning if if causes insomnia. If you take doxepin more than once a day, ask your doctor if you can take it once a day. These effects should decrease as you continue to take the drug. Contact your doctor if they persist or are severe.
2. Dizziness, lightheadedness, faintness when arising from a sitting or lying position. Get up slowly.
3. Dry mouth. Suck sugarless hard candies.
4. Persistent, fine tremor; shuffling walk; slow speech, difficulty swallowing; drooling; slow, jerky movements; jaw, back, and neck muscle spasms; inability to sit still; sore throat, fever, skin rash, and yellowing of skin or eyes; irregular heartbeat. Contact your doctor.

Other Precautions :
1. Before you take doxepin, tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking, especially monoaminooxidase inhibitors like isocarboxazid, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine; medication for high blood pressure, seizures, asthma, colds, or allergeis; sedatives; tranquilizers; sleeping pills; anticoagulants; thyroid; levodopa; antihistamines; and methylphenidate.
2. Before taking this drug, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding or if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, difficulty urinating, a history of seizures, an overactive thyroid gland, or a heart condition.
3. If you become pregnant while taking doxepin, notify your doctor promptly.
4. Alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug. Limit your consumption of alcoholic beverages.
5. Doxepin can makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight than usual. Wear protective clothing and a sunscreen preparation.
6. Before having surgery, tell the doctor that you take doxepin.
7. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

DOXAZOSIN

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is prescribed for an enlarged prostate treatment. It relaxes the muscles around the urethra and decreases chances of surgery.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Known hypersensitivity to quinazolines.

When it is to be taken : HTN Initial: 1 mg/day at bedtime. Maintenance: 4 mg once daily. Max: 16 mg/day. Benign prostatic hyperplasia Initial: 1 mg/day at bedtime. Maintenance: 2 to 4 mg/day. Max: 8 mg/day by oral

How it should be taken : This medication available in the form of tablet and an extended-release tablet to take by mouth, usually taken with or without food once a day in the morning or in the evening.

Special Instruction :
*Prostate cancer should be ruled out before starting therapy. *Orthostatic hypotension may occur at the initiation of therapy or when there is dose increase. *Avoid driving or performing hazardous tasks for 24 hr after starting therapy or dose changes. *Consult with your doctor during Pregnancy and lactation.

Side Effects :
Heart:
Irregular heart beat, chest pain.
Genitourinary:
Decreased sexual ability, painful erection of the penis that lasts for hours.
OTHERS:
Headache, tiredness, swelling of the mouth, shortness of breath, weight gain, joint pain, abnormal vision, runny nose, hives.

Donepezil

Generic Name : Donepezil

Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : It is a reversible inhibitor of acetylcholin-esterase

When it is to be taken :
Treatment of Alzheimers disease, specially for mild to moderate disease.

How it should be taken : 5 mg once daily at bedtime;if necessary increase to 10 mg daily after 1 month. Maximum dose 10 mg daily in single bedtime dose.

Special Instruction :
Contraindication: Pregnancy
, lactation.

Side Effects :

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. Fatigue, insomnia, muscle cramps. Occasionally headache, dizziness, syncope, bradycardia, AV block. Convulsions, anorexia, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, GI haemorrhage, hepatitis, urinary incontinence, possibly bladder outflow obstruction.

Sick sinus syndrome, supraventricular conduction abnormalities. Susceptiblity to peptic ulcers, asthma, COPD.

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : It is a laxative used in the treatment of constipation.It is a stool softener and its effect is seen within 1-3 days.It is also used as a ear-wax softener.

When it is to be taken : The dose is given orally or as enema as per the doctor's instructions.

How it should be taken
: It is available as capsules,syrup,enema or ear drops.

Special Instruction :
Should be used cautiously in pregnancy,lactation,neonates .

Side Effects :
Diarhoea,nausea,abdominal dramps rash. Enema may cause bleeding.

Other Precautions :
Contraindicated in hypersensitivity,intestinal obstruction and prolonged usage.Enema should not be used if hemorhoids or anal fissures are present. Ear drops not to be used if ear inflammation or ear-drum perforation is present.

Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : This medication is an anti- cancer drug, mainly used for the treatment of breast, ovarian, gastric cancer, head and neck cancer, prostate cancer and non-small cell lung cancer either alone or with other medications. It belongs to taxane group. It stops the growth and spread of cancer cells.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Previous severe hypersensitivity reaction to docetaxel, the solvent or polysorbate 80, severe decrease in white blood cells, pregnancy, severe liver impairment

When it is to be taken : Adult: IV Breast cancer Initial: 60-100 mg/m2 once 3 weekly as a single agent. Gastric adenocarcinoma; Head and neck cancer, non-small cell lung cancer; Prostate cancer 75 mg/m2 once 3 weekly.

How it should be taken
: It comes as a liquid to be given intravenously (into a vein) by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. It is usually given over 1 hour once every 3 weeks.

Special Instruction :
*You may develop muscle or joint pain, numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness in the hands, arms, legs, or feet. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if these symptoms occur.
*Monitor liver blood function and blood counts regularly.
*Pre-medication with oral dexamethsone at 16 mg daily for 3 days, starting one day before docetaxel treatment is recommended.
*Caution need during pregnancy and breast feeding.

Side Effects :
HEART- Low blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm, blood clot in deep vein, ECG abnormalities, heart attack, blood clot in the lung, syncope.
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM- Weakness, neurosensory and neuromotor symptoms, confusion, seizures, transient loss of consciousness.
SKIN- Hair loss, severe allergic reactions, nail changes.
EYE AND ENT- Inflammation of conjunctiva, tears, transient visual disturbances including flashes, flashing lights, and blurred vision.
GI- Mouth ulcer severe diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, taste perversion, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, inflammation small intestine of colon, constipation, dehydration associated with GI reactions, duodenal ulcer, GI hemorrhage, GI perforation, ileus, intestinal obstruction.
GENITOURINARY- Kidney failure.
BLOOD- Decrease in white blood cells, platelets, anemia, bleeding episodes.
LIVER- Increased level of liver enzymes, hepatitis.
HYPERSENSITIVITY- Severe hypersensitivity reactions.
LOCAL- Infusion-site reactions, inflammation of vein, redness or dryness of skin, and swelling of vein.
METABOLIC-NUTRITIONAL- Fluid retention.
MUSCULOSKELETAL- Joint pain, muscle pain.
RESPIRATORY- Acute pulmonary edema, acute respiratory distress syndrome, difficulty in breathing, stiffening and scarring of lung tissue.
MISCELLANEOUS- Infection, fever in absence of infection, death due to infection, non septic death, chest pain, diffuse pain, radiation recall phenomenon.

Other Precautions :
Avoid vaccination while taking this medication.

Storage Conditions :
Injection: Store at 2-25°C. It is usually handled and stored by a health care provider.

Disulfiram

Generic Name : Disulfiram

TradeName :
Disulfiram, Esperal

Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : Disulfiram is used to treat chronic alcoholism. It causes unpleasant side effects when even small amounts of alcohol are consumed. These side effects include flushing of the face, headache, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, weakness, blurred vision, mental confusion, sweating, choking, breathing difficulty, and anxiety. These effects begin about 10 minutes after alcohol enters the body and last for one hour or more.

When it is to be taken
: Disulfiram should be taken once a day. To help you remember to take it regularly, take it at the same time you do some regular daily activity, such as brushing your teeth in the morning or eating dinner.

How it should be taken : Disulfiram comes in the form of tablets. If you cannot swallow the tablets, crush them and mix the medication with water, coffee, tea, milk, soft drink, or fruit juice.

Special Instruction :

1. Do not drink any alcoholic beverages while taking disulfiram, during the 12-hours period before you take your first dose, and for several weeks after stopping the drug.
2. Always carry an identification card stating that you are taking disulfiram and indicating the doctor to be contacted in an emergency.
3. Disulfiram makes some patients drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate dangerous machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
4. Do not stop taking disulfiram without consulting your doctor.
5. Special dietary instructions should be followed. Avoid sauces, vinegars, and all foods and beverages containing alcohol.
6. If you remember a missed dose within 12 hours of when you should have taken it, take the missed dose. However, if it is more than 12 hours since you should have taken it, omit the missed dose and take only the next dose at its regularly scheduled time. Do not take more than one dose in a 12-hour period.

Side Effects :

1. Although side effects from disulfiram are not common, they can occur. Skin rash, acne, mild headache, drowsiness, tiredness, impotence. Contact your doctor.
2. Metallic taste or garlic-like taste in the mouth. This side effect usually disappear after a while.

Other Precautions :
1. Be sure that your doctor knows your entire medical history before you take disulfiram.
2. Disulfiram can affect the way that your body reacts to other drugs.
3. Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially amitriptyline, isoniazid, metronidazole, phentoin, warfarin, and nonprescription drugs that might contain alcohol.
4. Do not use liniments or lotions, including aftershave, that contain alcohol.
5. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Disopyramide

Generic Name : Disopyramide

Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : Disopyramide is used to treat irregular heartbeat. It relaxes an overactive heart and improves the effeciency of the heart's pumping action.

When it is to be taken :
Disopyramide usually is taken every six or 12 hours. Follow the instruction on your prescription label. It is important that you take disopyramide regularly on the exact schedule prescribed for you, even if you must awaken during the night to take it. Do not skip doses because irregular heartbeats may develop.

How it should be taken
: Disopyramide comes in the form of regular capsules and extended-release or long-acting capsules. Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose.

Special Instruction :
1. Keep all appointments with your doctor so your response to this drug can be determined. You probable will have an electrocardiogram
done periodically.
2. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Be sure that you have enough medication on hand at all times.
3. Follow your doctor’s advice on diet (including alcoholic beverages).
4. If you take disopyramide every 12 hours and remember a missed dose less than six hours before your next scheduled dose, take it immediately but skip your next scheduled dose; then resume your regular schedule. However, if you remember the missed dose more than six hours before you next schedule dose, take it immediately and resume your regular schedule. Similarly, if you take disopyramide every six hours and remember a missed dose less than three hours before your next scheduled dose, take it immediately but skip your next scheduled dose; then resume your regular schedule. Side Effects :

1. Dry mouth. Chew sugarless gum, suck sugarless hard candies or lozenges, or drink fluids.
2. Dry nose and eyes, constipation, difficulty breathing, blurred vision, impotence, dizziness, weakness, aches and pains, faintness. Contact your doctor if symptoms persist or are severe.
3. Weight gain, swelling of feet and lower legs, chest pain, frequent or difficult urination. Contact your doctor.

Other Precautions :
1. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should inform their doctors.
2. Before taking disopyramide, tell your doctor if you have myasthenia gravis; high blood pressure; glaucoma; heart, liver, kidney, or prostate disease; or difficulty urinating.
3. Before you take this drug, tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking, especially Phenobarbital, phenytoin, procainamide, propranolol, quinidine, and warfarin.
4. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

: Diltiazern tablets are usually taken four times a day, before meals and at bedtime. The extended-release or long-acting capsules are taken twice a day, 12 hours apart. This medication must be taken regularly to be effective. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

How it should be taken
: Diltiazern comes in the form of tablets and extended-release capsules. Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose.

Special Instruction :
1. Do not stop taking diltiazem without consulting your doctor. Keep all appointments with your doctor.

It relieves symptoms of heart failure such as swelling of the lower legs and ankles and shortness of breath.

When it is to be taken : Digoxin usually is taken once a day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully. This medication must be taken on a regular schedule. If you take this drug once a day, take it at the same time that you do something else every day, such as brushing your teeth in the morning or going to bed at night, to help you remember to take it.
