Generic Name : Amantadine
TradeName : Amantrel, Symadine, Symmetrel
Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Amantadine is used to treat Parkinson's disease and conditions similar to those of Parkinson's disease. It is also used to prevent and treat respiratory infections caused by influenza
A virus.
When it is to be taken : Amantadine is usually taken once or twice a day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label.If this medication causes insomnia (sleeplessness), take the last dose at least several hours before bedtime.
How it should be taken : Amantadine comes in the form of capsules and oral
Special Instruction :
1. Amantadine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or lightadedness. Do not drive a care or operate dangerous machinery.
2. If you forget to take a dose,take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, omit the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.
Side Effects :
1. Headache, confusion,sleeplessness, irritability, hallucinations can occur. Contact your doctor, if these effects persist or severe.
2. Skin rashes,swelling of feet and legs, vision problems, difficulty in urination,convulsions,dizziness, lighteadedness, faintness and Stomach upset are seen rarely. Take amantadine with food.
Other Precautions :
1. Alcoholic beverages may add to the drowsiness caused by amantadine.
2. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should inform their doctor.
3. Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy or any other type of seizures.
4. Tell your doctor about your prescription and nonprescription drugs especially benztropine, trihexyphenidyl, other medication for Parkinson’s disease, medication for spasms of the stomach or intestines, medication for depression
and stimulants.
5. Do not allow anyone else to take your medication.
Storage Conditions :
Keep amantadine in a tightly closed container and out of the reach of children.
