Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is prescribed in combination with HCG hormone for infertility in women who have not responded to other therapy. It is a human follicle-stimulating hormone. It stimulates the ovaries to produce eggs.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Pregnancy, ovarian cysts or enlargement not due to polycystic ovary syndrome, primary ovarian failure, organic intracranial lesion e.g. pituitary tumour, uncontrolled thyroid and adrenal dysfunction, presence of any cause of infertility other than anovulation, abnormal bleeding of undetermined origin.
When it is to be taken : IM/SC Female infertility; Polycystic ovarian disease Initial: 150 IU/day for the 1st 5 days. Adjust subsequent dosing based on clinical monitoring. Max: 450 u/day. Max duration: 12 days. Stop once adequate response is achieved followed by a single dose of chorionic gonadotrophin to induce ovulation after 1-2 days.
How it should be taken : Injection administered by a doctor or staff in a hospital.
Special Instruction :
1. You and your partner should have had a complete gynecological and hormone evaluation prior to starting therapy with Urofollitropin Purified.
2. If any of the following occur: severe stomach pain or bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight gain, difficulty breathing, infrequent urination contact your healthcare provider immediately.
3. It may result in multiple pregnancies, abnormal genital bleeding, hormone sensitive malignancies, ovarian cysts not caused by polycystic ovary syndrome.
4. Exclude and treat other causes of infertility e.g. pituitary or hypothalamic lesions, adrenal or thyroid disorders and high levels of prolactin in the blood.
Side Effects :
HEART- Hypertension.
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM- Headache, emotional lability, depression.
SKIN- Rash, acne, pealing or scaling of the skin.
GI- Abdominal cramps, nausea, abdominal fullness/enlargement, abdominal pain, constipation.
GENITOURINARY- OHSS, vaginal bleeding, pain following retrieval of eggs for in vitro fertilization, pelvic pain, hot flashes, uterine spasms, vaginal discharge, urinary tract infection, cervix disorder, ovarian disorder, breast tenderness, fungal infections.
METABOLIC- Weight gain, dehydration.
RESPIRATORY- Respiratory disorder, accidental injury.
MISCELLANEOUS- Pain, injection site reaction, neck pain, fever, accidental injury, anaphylactic reactions, multiple pregnancies.
Other Precautions :
It is not known whether this drug is excreted into human milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Storage Conditions :
Store in room temperature, and in airtight container. Keep away from children.
