Generic Name : Magnesium Hydroxide
TradeName : Milk of magnesia
Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Magnesium hydroxide is used on a short-term basis to treat constipation. It acts as an antacid as well as a laxative.
When it is to be taken : Magnesium hydroxide is taken as needed for constipation. Follow the directions on the label carefully. You should feel the effect of this drug within six hours.
How it should be taken : Magnesium hydroxide comes in the form of tablets and oral liqud. The label tells you how much to take at each dose. Shake the liquid well before each use. Chew the tablets thoroughly before swallowing them. Drink a full glass of water after each dose.
Special Instruction :
1. Do not take magnesium hydroxide for a longer time than as directed on the label or by your doctor. If you are still constipated, contact your doctor.
2. To help prevent constipation, drink plenty of fluids, exercies regularly, and eat a high-fiber diet, including whole-grain cereals, salads, fruits, and vegetables.
Side Effects :
Although side effects from magnesium hydroxide ae not common, they can occur. Stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhoea. Stop taking magnesium hydroxide and contact your doctor.
Other Precautions :
1. If you have stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting, do not take magnesium hydroxide; consult your doctor.
2. If you have kidney disease, consult your doctor before taking magnesium hydroxide.
Storage Conditions :
1. Keep this medication in the container it came in and out of the reach of children.
2. Store it at room temperature.
3. Do not allow the liquid to freeze.
