Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Hydromorphone is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. It also acts as a cough suppressant.
When it is to be taken : Hydromorphone is usually taken every four to six hours as needed but suppositories are used every six to eight hours as needed.
How it should be taken : Hydromorphone comes in the form of tablets, suppositories, and syrup. Our prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose. To insert a hydromorphone suppository into the rectum, follow these steps:

Special Instruction :
1. Hydromorphone can be habit-forming. Do not take it more often or for a longer period than your doctor tells you to, and do not take more than the amount prescribed.
2. Do not increase your dosage without consulting your doctor. This drug may decrease mental alertness.
3. Do not drive a car or operate dangerous machinery until you know how it affects you.
Side Effects :
1. Drowsiness, dizziness. Lie down for a while. If these effects continue or severe, contact your doctor.
2. Difficulty breathing. Alert family members or some other persons who is likely to be nearby to call your doctor immediately if you have difficulty breathing or feel faint.
Other Precautions :
1. If you are allergic to aspirin, tartrazine, or any other medication, tell your doctor before you take hydromorphone.
2. Tell your doctor what drugs, including nonprescription drugs, you are taking.
3. Do not take analgesics, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, antidepressants, sedatives, or any other medications while taking hydromorphone unless your doctor specifically tells you that you may.
4. Alcoholic beverages can add to the effects of hydromorphone, causing dizziness, drowsiness, and stomach irritation.
5. Ask your doctor for advice about the safe use of alcohol.
6. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should inform their doctors. 7. Do not allow anyone else to take your medication.
Storage Conditions :
1. Keep hydromorphone in the container it came in and out of the reach of children.
2. Protect if from light.
3. Store hydromorphone suppositories in a refrigerator.
