Overview : Acyclovir is an antiviral drug which slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection.

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Acyclovir is an antiviral therapy which is used in the treatment of Genital Herpes Simplex caused by virus.It is also used in other viruses like H.simplex encephalitis, H.simplex keratitis and chickenpox.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Avoid taking acyclovir if you are allergic to the medicine. Before taking acyclovir, inform your doctor about any allergy drugs, or if you have kidney disease. Consult with your doctor if you feel you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

When it is to be taken : Strictly follow the instructions on your drug prescription carefully. Treatment should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of sign and symptoms.

Missed a Dose? :
Incase if you missed a dose take it immediately. If it is time for your dose, take the dose at scheduled time. Extra medicine should not be taken to make up the missed dose.

How it should be taken : Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor.Take each pill with plenty of water to keep your kidneys work properly. Shake the oral suspension well before you measure a dose and take the correct dose and measure it with a marked measuring spoon.

Special Instruction :
Inform your doctor if symptoms persist. Keep the infected site clean and dry.Always Wear loose-fitting clothes to avoid irritation. Acyclovir can cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun until you know how you react to Acyclovir Use a sunscreen lotion or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.

Side Effects :
Acyclovir can cause side effects, but many people may have no, or mino side effects. Consult with your doctor if any of these most side effects persist Diarrhea; nausea/vomiting, severe allergic reactions aggressive behavior; blood in the urine; confusion; decreased consciousness; decreased urination; lower back pain; mental or mood changes; r seizures; unusual bruising or bleeding.

Other Precautions :
Try to avoid contact with eyes and do not allow anyone else to use this medication. Acyclovir Capsules can cause drowsiness, dizziness, vision changes, or lightheadedness. These effects may get worsen if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines.

Drug Interactions :
Before taking acyclovir, consult your doctor if you are also taking probenecid . If you are taking probenecid, you may not be able to use acyclovir, or you may need dosage adjustments. Inform your doctor about all the medicines and counter medications you take which includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors

Storage Conditions :
Keep acyclovir in a tightly closed container and store it at room temperature in a dry place.
