Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is prescribed for glaucoma and increased eye pressure, which can lead to a gradual loss of vision. It binds to a specific receptor for prostaglandin, increases the flow of aqueous humor out of the eye, thereby reducing the pressure within the eye and reducing the risk of nerve damage and blindness.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Allergy to latanoprost, benzalkonium chloride or any other ingredients of the product.
When it is to be taken : 1 drop (1.5 mcg) in affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.
How it should be taken : It comes as eye drops. Usually, one drop is applied to the affected eye(s) once a day in the evening. If it is used with other topical eye medications, allow at least 5 minutes between each medication.
Special Instruction :
• Do not use within 5 min of thiomersal-containing preparations.
• Caution needed in patients with history of aphakia (absence of lens of the eye) or pseudophakia with torn posterior lens cap or anterior chamber lenses; risk factors for cystoid macular oedema; brittle or severe asthma; history of intraocular inflammation; inflammatory, neovascular, angle-closure or congenital glaucoma; pregnancy, lactation.
• Remove contact lenses during use.
Side Effects :
HEART- Chest pain.
SKIN- Rash/allergic skin reaction.
EYE- Blurred vision, burning, increased redness, foreign body sensation, increased pigmentation of the iris, itching, damage to the cornea, stinging, dry eye, excessive tearing, eye pain, lid crusting, lid swelling, lid redness, lid discomfort/pain, increased sensitivity to light, cloudy appearance, eyelash and vellus hair changes (including increased length, thickness, pigmentation, and number), eyelid skin darkening, eye inflammation, Swelling of the retina (including cystoid macular edema), misdirected eyelashes.
RESPIRATORY- Upper respiratory tract infection, cold, flu, asthma/exacerbation of asthma, difficulty in breathing.
MISCELLANEOUS- Muscle/joint/back pain.
Other Precautions :
If using other topical ophthalmic drugs, separate each medication by at least 5 min.
Storage Conditions :
Ophthalmic: Store unopened at 2-8°C and at <25°C for up to 6 week after opening. Store it in airtight container and keep away from children.
