Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : Folic acid is used to treat or prevent folic acid deficiency. It is a B complex vitamin needed by the body to manufacture red blood cells. A deficiency of this vitamin causes certain types of anemia.

When it is to be taken
: Folic acid is taken once a day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully. If you are taking folic acid to treat a deficiency, you probably will feel better quickly, often within 24 hours. However, do not stop taking this drug until your doctor tells you to do so.

How it should be taken : Folic acid comes in the form of tablets. Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose.

Special Instruction :
1. Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will want to monitor your response to this medication and may want to change your dose.
2. Special dietary instructions should be followed. Your doctor may instruct you to eat more liver, kidney, foods prepared from dried yeast, fruit, and fresh leafy green vegetables to increase the folic acid in your diet.
3. If you forget to take a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if you remember a missed dose at the time you are scheduled to take the next dose, omit the missed dose completely and follow your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at once.

Side Effects :
Although side effects from folic acid are not common, they can occur. Skin rash, itching, and redness; difficulty breathing. Contact your doctor immediately.

Other Precautions :
1. This medication may affect the way your body reacts to certain drugs.
2. Tell your doctors what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking, especially phenytoin and vitamin preparations.
3. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Storage Conditions :
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from direct sunlight.
