Generic Name : Finasteride
TradeName : Finara,Finast,Finax,Fincar,Finpecia,Fintride.
Why it is prescribed (Indications) : It inhibits the conversion of testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone which is responsible for prostatic hyperplasia.It is therefore used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
When it is to be taken : 5mg once daily for a period of 6 months or more.
How it should be taken : It is taken orally as tablets.
Special Instruction :
It is important that undiagnosed prostatic cancer is ruled out.
To be used with caution in case of liver dysfunction.
To be taken on empty stomach as food decreases the rate and extent of absorption.
Side Effects :
Decreased libido,impotency,testicular pain.rash.
Other Precautions :
Contraindicated in hypersensitivity and in children.
Pregnant women should not have contact with the drug either through touching the crushed tablets or through the semen of patient taking the drug.
Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactationn.
Storage Conditions :
Store in cool aitright place out of reach of children.
