Generic Name : Etoposide
TradeName : Beposid, Bioposide, Eposed, Etosid, Fytosid, Laslet, Oncoside, Tevaside
Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Etoposide slows or stops the growth of cancer cells in your body. In addition to etoposide, your doctor may have ordered other cancer-fighting drugs; this treatment is called combination therapy.
When it is to be taken : It is available in the form of a clear fluid. It is also available as pale pink capsules of 50mg and 100mg. The purpose of chemotherapy is to control your illness so that your own body can aid in your recovery. It is important to build up your body's defense sytem, and a balanced diet is needed to build a healthy body.
How it should be taken : Etoposide is taken orally or intravenously. Dosage has to be determined by a doctor for each person individually.
Special Instruction :
1. Some other medicines can be harmful when you are having chemotherapy. Always tell your doctor about any other medicine you are taking.
2. While etoposide is being given, it can cause pain at the place where the injection is made, or along the vein. If you feel pain, tell the doctor or nurse.
3. It is important to take your capsules at the right times. You must take them as directed by your doctor.
Side Effects :
1. Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, inflammation of the mouth, loss of coordination of muscle movement, burning or prickling sensation on the skin, rapid heart beat, shortness of breath or wheezing, pain at site of injection, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, fatigue, and hair loss.
2. Mouth sores, ulcers, skin changes, sleeplessness,head ache and confusion are less common.
Other Precautions :
1. If your doctor decides to stop the treatment, return any remaining capsules to the pharmacist. Do not flush them down the toilet or throw them away.
2. If you are sick just after taking the capsules let your doctor know as you may need to take another one. Do not take another capsule without first informing your doctor.
3. If you forget to take a capsule do not take a double dose. Let your doctor know and keep to your regular dose schedule.
Storage Conditions :
Keep the capsules in a safe place where children cannot reach them, as etoposide could harm them
