Overview :
Ergocalciferol is one form of vitamin D which works by promoting proper absorption and use of calcium and phosphate in the body and also help to regulate parathyroid hormone levels.

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Ergocalciferol is vitamin D2 which is important for the absorption of calcium from the stomach and for the functioning of calcium in the body. Ergocalciferol is used to treat hypoparathyroidism and also used to treat rickets (softening of the bones caused by vitamin D deficiency).

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Don’t take ergocalciferol if • you are allergic to any ingredient in Ergocalciferol • you have high blood calcium levels, malabsorption syndrome, or you are experiencing toxic effects from taking too much vitamin D or having too much vitamin D in the body

How it should be taken : Use Ergocalciferol as directed by your physician. Ergocalciferol may be taken with or without food. Swallow the capsule as whole. Don’t break, crush, or chew before swallowing. Don’t take magnesium containing antacids while taking Ergocalciferol .

Special Instruction :

• Ergocalciferol can cause drowsiness hence do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Ergocalciferol . • Do not take large doses of multivitamins (megadoses or megavitamin therapy) while taking Ergocalciferol unless directed to by your doctor.

Side Effects :
Consult your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome: Aches; constipation; loss of appetite; nausea; weakness; weight loss. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); brittle bones; chills; diarrhea; dry mouth; excessive thirst; excessive urination; growth suppression in children; headache; mental retardation; metallic taste in your mouth; muscle or bone pain; sleepiness; stomach cramps; vomiting.

Other Precautions
:
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you suspect pregnany, discuss with your physician about the benefits and risks of using Ergocalciferol during pregnancy. If you breast-feeding while you are taking Ergocalciferol , consult your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Drug Interactions :
Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, especially: • sucralfate; • mineral oil (sometimes taken as a laxative); • seizure medication; • steroids ; • digoxin or • a diuretic such as chlorothiazide , hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, indapamide, metolazone.

Storage Conditions :
Store at 25° C (77° F); excursions permitted between 15° – 30° C (59° – 86°F) .
