Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : This medication is prescribed for depression and smoking cessation. It increases the levels of certain chemicals in the brain and reducing the cravings, anxiety, irritability and other symptoms associated with depression.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Epilepsy; eating disorders (e.g. bulimia or anorexia nervosa); hypersensitivity, patients treated with other medications that contain bupropion, in patients undergoing abrupt discontinuation of alcohol or sedatives (including benzodiazepines).

When it is to be taken
: Oral Smoking cessation Adult: Modified-release preparation: Initially, 150 mg once daily for 6 days then increased to 150 mg twice a day. Period of treatment: 7-12 wk. Elderly: 150 mg/day. Oral Depression Adult: Initially, 100 mg twice a day increased to 100 mg three times a day after 3 days if necessary. Increase further to 150 mg twice a day if no improvement has been observed after several week of therapy.

How it should be taken
: It comes as a tablet and a sustained-release or extended-release (long-acting) tablet to take by mouth, without meals.

Special Instruction
:
Patient may develop suicidal tendencies.Avoid using decongestants, stimulants, or diet pills while you are taking this medication. They may increase your risk of seizures. Do not stop alcohol consumption suddenly. Don’t take this medication while you are using other brands containing bupropion. Caution need for patients with history of alcoholism, street drugs use, or overuse prescription medications, heart attack; a head injury; a tumor in brain or spine; high blood pressure; diabetes; or liver, kidney, or heart disease, seizure disorders, bipolar disorders; unstable heart disease; pregnancy; It may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

Side Effects
:
HEART
Increased heart rate, abnormal heart rhythm, flushing, hypertension, hot flashes, chest pain.
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Headache, agitation, sleeplessness, dizziness, tremor, sedation, disturbed concentration, anxiety, confusion, hostility, fatigue, nervousness, loss of energy, impaired sleep quality, migraine, sensory disturbances, abnormal dreams, decreased memory, feeling jittery, irritability.
SKIN
Sweating, rash, itching, hives.
EYE AND ENT
Blurred vision, inflammation of the nasopharynx, sensation of buzzing, ringing, clicking, double vision, deafness, increased eye pressure.
GI
Dry mouth, constipation, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, taste perversion, vomiting, indigestion, difficulty in swallowing.
GENITOURINARY
Menstrual complaints, urinary frequency, impotence, urinary retention, vaginal bleeding, urinary tract infection, abnormal ejaculation, decreased sexual activity
BLOOD
Altered Prothrombin Time, anemia, bruising, transient increase in white blood cells, deficiency of all three cell elements of the blood, erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets.
LIVER
Inflammation of the liver, liver damage.
METABOLIC-NUTRITIONAL
Weight loss, in some people weight gain, glucose in urine.
MUSCULOSKELETAL
Muscle pain, joint pain, inflammation of joints, pain in extremity, muscle spasm, twitch muscle rigidity, muscle weakness.
RESPIRATORY
Upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, cough, pneumonia.
Miscellaneous
Infection, fever, hypersensitivity reaction.

Other Precautions :

Monitor BP before and after treatment; monitor weekly if used with nicotine products.

Storage Conditions
:
Oral: Store at 15-25°C. Store it in airtight container and keep away from children.
