Nitrazepam

Generic Name : Nitrazepam

TradeName : Baronite,Dormin,Hypnotex ,Insomin Forte,Nitrosun,Stressban.

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : It is a hypnotic Benzodiazepam with a high sleep inducing activity.It acts within 20-30 minutes and the effect lasts for a duration of 8 hours with less awakenings.There are no hangover effects.It is used in the short term treatment of insomnia and management of infantile spasms.

When it is to be taken : 5mg is given at night.The dose is increased if necessary.

How it should be taken : It is taken orally as tablets.

Special Instruction :
The dose is halved in elderly patients.Special care must be taken in respiratory disease,pregnancy,lactation,renal and hepatic impairment.Withdrawal of the drug should be gradual and prolonged useage is not advisable.It should not be used with other drugs like barbitutates,tricyclic antidepressants and morphine derivatives.Alcohol is to be avoided.

Side Effects :
Drowsiness,amnesia,vertigo
,confusion,slurred speech.

Other Precautions :
Contraindicated in Myasthenia gravis,sleep apnea,hypersensitivity,severe hepatic impairment.

Storage Conditions :
Store in a cool place out of reach od children.
