Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Loxapine is a tranquilizer used to treat emotional and mental conditions. It helps control symptoms such as disorienttion, hallucinations, and hostility.
When it is to be taken : Loxapine is usually taken two to four times a day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label.
How it should be taken : Loxapine comes in capsules and concentrate i.e., oral liquid. Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose. If you are using the oral liquid, it should be diluted. Carefully measure the proper dose with the dropper provided and place it
Special Instruction :
1. Because loxapine causes drowsiness in some people, do not drive a car or operate dangerous machinery until you know how the drug affects you. This effect should disappear when your body adjusts to this medication.
2. If you are to take loxapine for a long time, your doctor may ask you to have your eyes examined.
3. Keep all appointments with your doctor.
4. If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember and take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals. However, if you remember a missed dose when it is almost time for your next dose, take only the scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Side Effects :
1. Dry mouth. Such hard sugarless candy or chew sugarless gum.
2. Dizziness, especially when you get up from a sitting or lying position. Try getting up slowly. Contact your doctor if this problem continues or is severe.
3. Constipation; weakness; stiffness of the arms and legs, jerky movement of the head, mouth, and neck; trembling and shaking of hands and fingers. Contact your doctor; your doctor may have to adjust your dose or prescribe another drug to control these symptoms.
4. Worm-like movements of the tongue, fast heartbeat, difficulty breathing. Stop taking the drug and contact your doctor immediately.
Other Precautions :
1. Drinking alcoholic beverages can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
2. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should inform their doctors.
3. Because certain medications can increase the possibility and severity of side effects when taken with loxapine, tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking.
4. Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcoholism, seizures or epilepsy, difficult urinating, glaucoma, severe mental depression, parkinson's disease, or heart disease.
Storage Conditions :
Keep this medication in the container it came in and out of the reach of children.
