Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is prescribed for diabetes mellitus. It is used with other medium- or long-acting insulin product injected just below the skin to control high blood sugar. It helps sugar (glucose) get into cells.

When it is not to be taken
(Contraindications) : Low blood sugar, allergy to insulin aspart, excipients.

When it is to be taken : SC Usual range: 0.5 to 1 u/kg/day

How it should be taken : It comes as a solution (liquid) to inject subcutaneously (under the skin). It is usually injected immediately before meals (5 to 10 minutes before eating). It can also be infused under the skin using an external insulin pump.

Special Instruction :
*Avoid changing the type of insulin, without health care provider’s advice. *It may harm liver or kidney functions, pregnancy; lactation. *Monitor serum glucose, potassium, electrolytes, HbA1c and lipid profile. *Precautions should be taken during concomitant illness especially infections low level potassium in blood. *Change the injection site within same area.*Developing a fever or infection, eating significantly more than prescribed, or missing your dose of insulin may cause high blood sugar (hyperglycemia).

Side Effects :
METABOLIC- Low blood sugar, weight gain, low potassium level in blood.
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM- Headache, neuropathy, seizure, sensory disturbances.
SKIN- Lipodystrophy (from repeated insulin injection into same site), itching, rash, skin disorder.
ALLERGIC REACTIONS- Rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; wheezing.
GI- Extreme thirst, extreme hunger, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting.
EYE- Diabetic retinopathy, inflammation of nasopharynx.
GENITOURINARY- Urinary tract infection.
HEART- Fast or irregular heart beat.
RESPIRATORY- Upper respiratory tract infection
LOCAL- Catheter occlusions, infusion-site reactions, itching at injection site, redness, swelling.
LAB TESTS- Elevated alkaline phosphatase.
MISCELLANEOUS- Accidental injury, chest pain, absent reflexes, influenza, onychomycosis ( fungal infection of the nail), peripheral edema.

Other Precautions :
*If you will be traveling across time zones, consult your doctor concerning adjustments in your insulin schedule. *Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication.

Storage Conditions :

Store unopened vials, cartridges, and pens in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.
