Generic Name : Diethylpropion

TradeName : Tenuate, Dospan, Tepanil

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Diethylpropion decreases appetite. It is used, on a short-term basis, in combination with diet to help you lose weight.

When it is to be taken
: Diethylpropion usually is taken three times a day, one hour before meals, or once a day in midmorning. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully.

How it should be taken
: Diethylpropion comes in the form of regular and extended-release(long-acting) tablets. Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose.

Special Instruction
:
1. Diethylpropion may be habit-forming. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer period than as directed.
2. Contact your doctor if Diethylpropion loses its effect.
3. Diethylpropion can decrease your alertness and physical coordination. Do not drive a car or operate dangerous machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
4. Follow your doctor's instructions. Eat a low-calorie, well-balanced diet. 5. Omit the missed dose completely; take the next dose at the regularly scheduled time.

Side Effects :
1. Although side effects from Diethylpropion are not common, they can occur.
2. Dry mouth, unpleasant taste. Suck sugarless hard candies, chew sugarless gum, or drink sugarless fluids.
3. Restlessnsss, nervousness, anxiety, dizziness, insomnia, depression, headaches, tremors, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, muscle pain, increased urination. Contact your doctor if these effects are severe or persist.
4. Fast or irregular heartbeats, palpitations, blurred vision vision, skin rash, itching, difficulty breathing, fever, sore throat, chills, painful urinatin. Contact your doctor.

Other Precautions :

1. Before you take Diethylpropion, tell your doctor if you have heart or blood vessel disease, high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid gland, diabetes, glaucoma, or a history of seizures or drug abuse; if you ever had a bad reaction to amphetamines, other diet pills
, or medications for allergies, hay fever, and colds; and if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
2. Before you take Diethylpropion, tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking, especially guanethidine, insulin, and monoaminooxidase inhibitors, even if you stopped taking them in the last two weeks.
3. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Storage Conditions
:
1. keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children.
2. Store it at room temperature and away from moisture.
