Generic Name : Chloroquine

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : It is an antimalarial agent used for the supression of malaria. It is an excellent Schizonticide. It probably influences haemoglobin digestion by intavesicular pH in malarial parasite cells. It also interferes with synthesis of nucleo proteins by parasite.

When it is to be taken : The medication is given orally or IM. It is well absorbed from GI tract. After IM injection, absorption is rapid. Its onset of action is 48-72 hrs and duration of action is up to 7 days.

How it should be taken : It comes in the form of 250, 500mg tablets. The medication also comes in the form of 5ml inj, 30ml v, 60ml sus, 100mg/10ml.

Special Instruction :
Nausea, epigastric distress vomitting, itching and headache. Chronic therapy may cause loss of vision due to retral damage. Skin rash, photoallergy, myopathy, loss hearing and graying of hair.

Side Effects :
Patients with G6pD deficiency, peripheral neuropathy, visual field charting is required during prolonged therapy.

Other Precautions :
Use with caution in case of pregnancy and lactation. The drug interacts with antacids, cholinergics, cimetrdine, pyrimethamine and ampicillin.
