Why it is prescribed (
Indications) : This medication is prescribed for colon or rectal cancer, either alone or in combination with other medications. It is an anti cancer drug. It stops the growth of cancer cells.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Inflammatory bowel disease, bowel obstruction, severe liver impairment, pregnancy and lactation. Irinotecan hydrochloride injection is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug.

When it is to be taken
: IV 125 mg/m2 once wkly for 4 week, followed by a 2 week rest period.

How it should be taken
: This medication available in the form of liquid to be given over 90 minutes intravenously (into a vein) by healthcare providers, once in a week.

Special Instruction :

*It may make you dizzy or affect your vision
. Do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication. *Consult with your doctor before you receive any vaccinations during your treatment with this medication. *Caution needed for patients with diabetes, fructose intolerance, or liver, lung, or kidney disease. *Report any symptoms of fluid or electrolyte loss to your doctor.*It may increase the level of plasma-bilirubin concentration and lead to severe decreased bone marrow activities.

Side Effects :
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Dizziness; drowsiness; trouble sleeping; weakness; headache; lightheadedness; confusion; dizziness, discomfort.
GI
Constipation; gas; increased salivation; indigestion; loss of appetite; mouth sores; nausea; stomach pain/cramps; dehydration; diarrhea.
SKIN
Hair loss; sweating; redness, or swelling at the injection site.
MUSCLE AND BONE
Back pain; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; pain in the groin or lower legs.
MISCELLANEOUS
Cough; flushing; tearing; weight loss; chest pain; fainting; fever, chills, shortness of breath.

Other Precautions :
*Avoid use of laxatives because of the risk of increased diarrhea. *Avoid extravasations.
