Why it is prescribed
(Indications) : This medication is prescribed for Addison's disease and syndromes where excessive amounts of sodium are lost in the urine. It decreases the amount of sodium that is lost (excreted) in the urine.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : Hypersensitivity, hypertension, systemic fungal infections.

When it is to be taken
: Primary adrenocortical insufficiency 50-300 mcg/day. Salt-losing adrenogenital hyperplasia Up to 200 mcg/day.

How it should be taken
: This medication available in the form of tablet to take by mouth.

Special Instruction :
* If you have a fungal infection (other than on your skin), avoid this medication. *Caution should be exercised in patients with history of liver, kidney, intestinal, or heart disease; diabetes; an under active thyroid gland; high blood pressure; mental illness; myasthenia gravis; osteoporosis; herpes eye infection; seizures; tuberculosis (TB); or ulcers, during pregnancy and lactation. *It may affect blood sugar, monitor blood sugar regularly.

Side Effects :
CARDIOVASCULAR:
Swelling; hypertension; heart failure; heart enlargement.
MUSCLE:
Muscle weakness.
GI:
Increase in blood glucose, growth suppression, peptic ulcer.
SKIN: Bruising; increased sweating; hives; rash.
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM:
Dizziness, headache, convulsions.
EYE AND ENT:
Cataract, raised intraocular pressure and reduced visual acuity.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Deficiency of potassium in the blood.

Other Precautions :
*Avoid alcohol consumption.

Storage Conditions :
Store at 2-8°C. Store it in air tight container.

  1. Fludrocortisone is a man-made form of a natural substance (glucocorticoid) made by the body. It is used along with other medications (e.g., hydrocortisone) to treat low glucocorticoid levels caused by disease of the adrenal gland (e.g., Addison's disease, adrenocortical insufficiency, salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome).
