Generic Name : Allopurinol

TradeName : Allgoric, Zyloric, Zyloprim, Ciploric, Lopurin

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : Allopurinol is used to treat chronic gout and to reduce the plasma concentration uric acid.

When it is to be taken : Allopurinol is usually taken once a day, preferably after meals. Follow the instructions on your prescription carefully.

How it should be taken : Allopurinol is available in the form of tablets.St

Special Instruction :
1. Allopurinol should not be started during an acute attack of gout.
2. This drug makes some people drowsy.
3. It only controls the symptoms,but do not prevent the disease.
4. Drink atleast eight glasses of water or other fluids.

Side Effects
:
Hypersensitivity reaction consisting of rashes,fever,malaise and musclepain is the most frequent.Gastric irritation,headache,nausea and dizziness are infrequent.Liver damage is rare.

Other Precautions
:
1. Allopurinol is contraindicated in hypersensitive patients,during pregnancy and lactation.
2. It should be cautiously used in the elderly,children and in kidney or liver disease.
3. Iron therapy is not recommended during allopurinol treatment.
4. It can potentiate Warfarin and Theophylline by inhibiting their metabolism
